You have to remove the instrument cluster and the trim beside the air outlet vent beside the cluster. There is a nut holding the threaded part of the switch collar around the shaft thru the dashboard panel. If you remove that nut, the switch can be pulled back and can be seen thru the hole made by removing the cluster.

I may be way off, but in my '85 240, the relay is beneath the dash on the passenger side. I don't know if it was moved after 85. Good luck.
