How do you remove the drive-shafts of a 19981.9 TDi VW Sharan?

how to remove

7M vw sharan/Seat alhambra/galaxy Driveshafts

remove the centre of wheel cover on alloy wheels/

remove wheel trim on steel wheels

apply hand brake firmly and apply footbrake get an asssistant to undo the

bolt in the centre of the front wheels (a long torque bar helps here)

whilst footbrake being pressed..

undo slightly the front wheel nuts ,jack up the front end of the car

AND ENSURE ITS WELL SUPPORTED (AXLE STANDS)

remove the relative front wheel ..

separate track rod end ball joint.(keep the nut safe)

undo the two allen bolts holding the lower ball joint (keep them safe too)

remove the bolt in the centre of the driveshaft end.(keep these safe for possible reuse)

pull the bottom of suspension leg towards you and turn slightly whilst pushing firmly on the end of the drive shaft,push the shaft through the hub.

manoever the shaft so you can firmly grip it behind the outer cv joint,

get in to a comfortable position and yank the shaft out,a good clatter with a nylon faced hammer around the inner cv joint may help here before you start pulling ....

Note**

the front left hand shaft goes in to the gearbox directly when removed

gearbox oil will leak out,be prepared to catch in a drip tray so you will know roughly how much to put back in when you are done..

to fit the new left hand drive shaft -first check there is a spring clip inside the socket end on the new shaft and it can move when (not stuck in the protective coating sometimes applied to deter corrosion.apply a small amount of lubricant to inside of driveshaft socket end,take a torch/lamp and inspect the seal and splines in the gearbox where the driveshafts fit,if the seal IS damaged NOW is the time to replace it .

To fit new shaft first wipe the outside of inner cv jointwhere the seal will run against it with clean gearbox oil,rotate inner end of shaft until located on gearbox output shaft splines .now you need to engage the springclip.

i find to positively do this use a length of broom handle or similar locate the end

against inner cv joint shoulder and hit the end of handle with large hammer,rotate shaft between blows there may be a audible click as clip engages.relocate the end of the outer cv joint/driveshaft through hub unit

start the shaft end nut on threads.

refit the lower arm allen screws and tighten

reconnect steering track rod end and fit and tighten the nut.

tighten driveshaft nut(with assistant pressing foot brake)

refit wheel, fit wheel nuts,jack up off axle stand and lower down off jack..

fully tighten wheel nuts, fully tighten driveshaft bolt ,refit wheel centre cap/wheel trim.

You may or may not have new bolts on your new drive shaft, mine went from the original 24mm hex head bolt to 19mm allen head bolt

Now to remove right hand driveshaft

remove the wheel and shaftend bolt in similar manner to the left hand side..... note**the inner cv joint connects to gearbox shaft extension now this has been exposed to all road dust grit etc and may be

sticky to separate,perseverance here and a nylon faced hammer helps.

when driveshaft is disconnected check for play on the extension piece

gearbox end joint by rotating the shaft..

if you are confident that the gearbox shaft extension bearing is ok

buy the driveshafts without the extension parts. this makes the cost of driveshafts a similar price for right and left..

the extension piece and bearing can cost more than the cost of two driveshafts!!!!!!

I managed to replace both shafts on my own vehicle in a morning,and they cost me roughly £65 each(december 2012)
