For my 2001 Suburban, I couldn't find the right tool even at Autozone and others to hold the water pump pulley while loosing up the fan clutch nut. I would have to order a special tool online for over $60 plus shipping and handling for a one-time job. One suggested the using of a chisel and hammer which to me is a gamble you're taking on the possibility of damaging the fan and clutch. This is what I did, which worked out great, cheap, safe and easy.
I picked up a spool of rebar wires (gage 16 and only this size available) at Home Depot $3. I tripled up the wires for strength and fed them through one of the four little holes on the waterpump pulley. Wrap it around the frame which holds the alternator. Pull it somewhat tight while twisting the wires together at least 5 times to prevent slipping out from each other. While doubling up the wire might be sufficient a single wire wasn't strong enough for mine. Make sure to tie it to something solid like a frame and not to a part that will break when heavy tension is applied to the wires. Now all you need is turn the wrench counterclockwise on the large nut and you'll be home free. Leave the wires in to reinstall the fan. When putting back the nut, it is best to give it a quick tap on the wrench with a hammer or anything to tighten the nut back. You don't need to apply too much torque to the nut. Hope this will help you and calm you down from thought of the senselessness of not having the tool for it available anywhere.
you have to have fan clutch wrenches
Axe?
the fan clutch is attached with one large nut that is part of the clutch assembly .NOTE the the cluth has LEFT HAND thread.
Remove the fan itself then remove the clutch from the fan
To replace..got to take the fan clutch off. Remove hoses. Use permatex when putting new one on. Autozone has fan clutch removal tool. Very helpful. Thanks..good luck
Remove the fan belt, by loosening the tensioner pulley. Remove the fan clutch with the retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install the new fan clutch.
To remove the fan clutch on a Chevy Tahoe, the upper fan shroud must first be removed. Once removed, a tool is needed to hold the clutch in place to allow for the fan to be removed. The nuts must be unscrewed on the fan in a counterclockwise rotation. Remove the nuts on all side and the fan clutch will remove.
how to remove the clutch fan on the 530i bmw
You need to rent or buy a fan clutch removal tool kit. you need to remove the fan and clutch as one before you can separate the fan from the clutch.
remove the fan clutch and fan first
First you have to remove the fan shroud which is bolted to the radiator and front cross bracket with 10mm bolts. There should be 4 10mm bolts that hold the fan and clutch to the water pump. What you generally have to do is find a way to hold the clutch fan in place, I have used a large flat tip screwdriver in the past. Then you have to loosen the 4 bolts and remove the clutch and fan as a single unit. Once out of the vehicle you should be able to remove the fan from the clutch unit and only replace the clutch unit itself. Hope that helps a little Michael
