you dont..they are set in a harness in the back of the headlight assembly which is locked in place..you turn it to unlock it and remove it.
You have to remove the battery, then the frame holding the battery and the fuse box. After that you can remove the cover to access the bulbs. Its an annoying hassle just to replace the bulb.

I have a 2002 Mercury Cougar with a broken headlight cover and was told by the dealership that I would have to get an entire new assembly. I have been looking for about 8 months and I have to tell you, they are almost impossible to find and very expensive. $225-$325 if you can find one. Good luck! Sealed unit, you have to replace the headlight, eBay has them often.
