The first step to remove the seat of you Honda Steed 400 vlx is to remove the fuel tank. The fender struts have a tab the fits to a bracket on the seat. There are bolts and screws on each side that can the removed and you can lift off the seat back first then slide the tab out from the front. You may need to unloosen the fender stuts to allow for some wiggle rom with the tabs or alignment. The Struts are 12mm. If it is bolted in from the back of the rack. Remove the rear cover.

This is a simple procedure on most quads; I will use my Kawasaki Prairie 400 as an example. The battery on this ATV is located under the seat; first thing is to pull the seat release located at the rear of the machine under the back fender. Once the release has been pulled the seat is free to be removed. After setting the seat aside the battery is right there. The battery will be held in its compartment with a strap. Slide the rear back support up and remove 4. There is a flap in the center that you flip up and you will find a circular plate 5. Remove plate with a scraper or screwdriver 6. There will be another plate with 8 Phillips screws to be removed 7. You will next find the fuel pump inside the fuel tank attached by 3 nuts Note- disconnect the battery at least 90 seconds before starting work near the gas tank.
