remove the thermostat housing
The thermostat is located inside of the top water hose inlet. Remove the top hose, then the inlet to remove the thermostat.
You pry it out.
It is at the engine end of the top radiator hose. Drain the radiator into a container and remove the hose at the thermostat housing. Remove the 2 bolts and remove the housing and the thermostat.
It is very simple to change the thermostat in a 2004 E 150 Van. The thermostat can be found by following the upper radiator hose. After the thermostat is found, disconnect the radiator hose and drain it. Then, you will remove the two bolts that are holding the thermostat housing place. Remove the old thermostat and replace it with a new one.

In a 2004 Subaru Outback, the thermostat is located on the bottom of the engine on the driver's side. Remove the screws holding the fitting that the hose (from the bottom of the radiator leading to the engine block) is attached to, remove the fitting, and the thermostat will be underneath.
Drain the radiator. Remove the clamp on the top hose of the radiator at the engine. Remove the bolts holding the housing. Remove the thermostat and clean the surface. Install the new thermostat and reverse the procedure from there.
Drain the radiator. The thermostat is in a housing connected to the water pump. Remove the housing to replace the thermostat and gasket.
