First get the A/C compresser clutch removal tool or loan one at the autoparts store (If they do that in your area), then get the socket you need for the tool (this may vary depending on the tool), you will also need a ratchet (in the same size drive as that socket) you need a boxend wrench (that may also vary depending on your version of the tool), a medium sized flathead screwdriver, a mallet (preferably rubber if not use a block of wood or piece of plastic in between metal and mallet). o.k. you now need a breaker bar and socket that fit the pulley tensioner. Step 1-Take fanbelt off the a/c clutch (and only the a/c clutch you dont need to completley remove it).Step 2- screw the puller/removal tool into the front of the a/c compessor clutch and tighten with the boxend wrench. Step 3- Use the boxend wrench to hold the clutch in place while you use your ratchet and socket to tighten down the removal tool. tighten slowly until the clutch begins to slide off the shaft of the compressor (if it is tough to turn with the ratchet try spraying around the clutch with WD40). Step 4-remove the clutch completley from the vehicle. Step 5-remove the old bushing carefully with your flathead screwdriver. Step 6- Insert new bushing into clutch and seat it (A.K.A tap it into place) with your mallet. Step 7- put clutch back onto compressor shaft and tap gently with mallet till it starts to go on then aplly pressure evenly to front of clutch while you continue to tap it on with your mallet, once it is seated make sure it is back in the original position it was in. Step 8- replace fanbelt. Step 9- pat yourself on the back you did something and saved yourself $75+ an hour.
This is not cost effective. It's quicker and cheaper to replace the compressor.
how do you replace the AC compressor clutch on 2006 liberty
Check the clutch and see if it needs replaced; more then likely the compressor came apart on the inside and you'll have to replace it, flush the lines, and replace the orfice.
This requires special tools to remove and install the ac clutch and bearing. The air gap on the ac clutch must be done during install.
bad clutch bearing
sometimes there is a nut right in the center of the pully youcan loosen but sometimes it is pressure fitted on and you need a special machine to get it off.
My car is going through the same issue with the A/C. You CAN replace the compressor clutch without replacing the compressor, but the caveat is that you can't tell if the compressor is any good without a clutch. So basically you are gambling that the compressor will still be good by only replacing the clutch. Hope this helps!
My 99 is in the shop as we speak for a compressor. I have heard that some people replace only the clutch...
It is possible to replace the air conditioner clutch without replacing the entire compressor if you can find somewhere that sells just the clutch assembly and can get the appropriate tool to remove the pulley to get to the clutch. Try buying a repair manual and looking in there.
Yes, if the compressor's bearings are bad, usually accompanied by a roaring or squealing noise coming from the compressor's pulley.
If the AC pulley is locking up when the ac compressor clutch engages, it's not a clutch problem, it's a compressor problem. But yes, the AC clutch can usually be replaced separately. The problem is, if the clutch is worn out the compressor is probably worn out as well. It usually isn't that much more to replace the whole thing.
The ac clutch is held on with a single nut, and can be removed with a remover tool. It the tool will not fit in the space available, then the entire compressor will have to be removed to replace the clutch.
