I replaced mine by dismantling the plate on the backside of the tailgate (the side that you walk on when the gate is down). There are a number of screws to take out. Once the plate is off the latch (mine was black plastic) is exposed and can be removed with 2 bolts. I got a big surprise when I took this very simple plastic latch to the Ford dealer and found they wanted $65 (Canadian) for a new one

You need to order the part(s) first, which you can do at your local Toyota dealership or at an auto parts store. Then, you simply disassemble the tailgate, remove the defective latch component, and put in the new part, and then reassemble the tailgate.

Unfortunally you can't replace just the cables. They come with the latch assembly and there is a left and right.

Pull the door panel off, remove the door latch assembly from inside the door, and replace the switch which is hold onto the latch with one screw on the backside of the latch.

You have to take off the plastic surround around the handle for the tail gate then pull the two silver rods toward each other or toward the handle and the gate will come down. Most likely the spring has broken or the lock stop and the kit to replace the whole latch assembly is about $35.00.

If the door latch on a 1999 Chevrolet Blazer is broken on the car frame, a new latch might have to be welded in. The old door latch will have to be cut out with a torch. If the latch is broken on the door, a new door might be cheaper than welding in a new latch.

remove the panel from the gate (it may be difficult if the gate is still closed). there is a metal panel held w/ screws; remove that panel and the latch will be visible. pull both rods at the same time to unlatch the gate (careful, the space is small and the truck loves to pinch!).

User Avatar

where your latch is broken at you can use a pair of pliers and pull the exposed cable wire and it should open best thing when u open it replace the cable wire

User Avatar

The latch assembly and cable is one piece.

I once had a 1987 that had the same problem! On the inside of the tailgate, at the top ends, there should be a small lever. You can flip them one at a time and it will un latch the tailgate!

User Avatar

Remove the panel behind the latch then remove the clip from the lock and it comes right out, it isn't connected to any mechanism inside the tailgate.
