Because this job can be complicated for the inexperienced, I recommend investing in a Haynes Repair Manual. The one that covers this vehicle is #36059 and covers Ford Pick-ups and Expeditions from 1997 thru 2002. I recently replaced the bulbs in my instrument cluster, so I can attest that it is a pain to do this job. It is not very hard, but it takes some time. The bulbs are cheap, so I bought a box of ten and replaced them all, because as you know, if I just replaced the two that were bad, I'd be going back very soon to do the rest. The Haynes manual is very good. You have to remove the headlight switch first, and there is a trick to that. The illustrations are great to find the screws that hold things together. I followed the book step by step and found the help to be excellent. Good luck.
You might want to check or replace your dash dimmer light switch. I found this to cause either no dash lights or intermittent lights. Check the fuse box under the hood. The fuse you need is under the hood.

Check to make sure the brake lights are working when the dash lights don't - usually it's a fuse in the brake light circuit.Om both of these, it is a tedious job not ot mess something up while working in the printed circuits etc. I suggest taking it ot a garage.

The dash has to be removed. Once the dash is out, the top of the heater case comes off to gain access to the core.

To change the dash light bulbs you must remove the instrument panel.
The instrument cluster needs to be removed to get at the bulbs.
To replace the dashboard lights on the 1997 F-150, you will first need to remove the dash bezel and dash cover in order to access the lights. Then, remove the instrument panel cover below the bezel and remove the burned out lights. Replace the lights and add the cover, dash cover, and bezel back to the dashboard.
I went to the dealer, and I have been quoted $90.00 to replace the climate control nob light bulb. How do I get to the dash board to replace it?
