I don't know what year your vehicle is I am basing this on a 1992 Limited. Above your gauges there are two screws. Remove the two screws and the panel that frames the gauges and your front panel around the steering wheel. There is a small piece under the steering wheel that will have to be removed to get the whole thing off and away from where you are working. In back of this is a white (in my case) plastic section held in be 4 screws that were black. (I originally took out the clear view panel and the black frame panel that were inside just over the gauges but, didn't need to.) Remove these screws and carefully start bringing the whole unit out, which included my idiot light section. If there is a cable connected to the speedometer it gets even trickier because this panel will not want to move due to the cable (you will have to find out from someone else how to remove it with a cable, there is a tension spring on it.) Mine was electronic and their were two sets of wires connected to the back end of it, you have to unplug these wires and then wiggle it out. Mine got caught up a bit on the left hand lower screw so be careful. Then when you get a replacement work this situation backwards and you're done. I just did this Thursday, I'm a 44 year old woman, so if I can you can.
A 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee does not have a speedometer cable. The speedometer signal comes from a sensor on the transmission or transfer case.
It does not have a cable, the speedometer is electric.

A 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee does "NOT" have a speedometer cable. It has an electronic speedometer with a built in motherboard. It receives its signsls from sensors on the transmission and the transfer case.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee didn't exist until 1993.
Correction; that should read "Idle speed motor" I thought this translated to an important question I didn't see here: "How do you replace a speedometer on a Jeep Grand Cherokee?" Mine, in my 1993 Grand Cherokee, has not worked properly for two years and a speedometer shop tried but couldn't fix it. I've been using my Tachometer to estimate MPH. Apologies to the original poster if the correction is yours. And sorry to everyone else since neither of these are answers.
