If you look up "How do you replace a timing chain gasket on a 1996 Ford Windstar LX 3.8?" on this message board you will find 95% of the answer. The other 5% is to replace the timing chain once you have the timing cover removed. This is a big job, about two days of wrenching for someone with good mechanic skills. Answer 2 This is indeed difficult. The manual states you need to remove the engine. The reason is the bolts are so long that hold this cover on they hit the shock tower before they can be removed. The only way around this is to create holes through the shock tower so they can be removed and then reinstalled. I used an acetylene torch and made 3 holes in the tower to remove the 3 longest bolts. This is a dangerous fire hazard so the utmost caution must be used. I have worked on cars for many years and this is probably the most difficult repair I have made. There is a lot involved. Half of the work is from above and half through the wheelwell. I agree with the guy above, 2 days and above average mechanical skills. Trust me this job is a pain.
