It would be a good idea to get a Haynes repair manual at your local parts place for $20. It will pay for itself the first time you do anything. There are 27 steps to R and R the timing belt. btw your engine is a non-interference engine which means that when the belt breaks your engine doesn't get any damage. So get a manual and do it yourself.
When I had mine done it was $297 parts and labor.
timing belt
May be a bad timing belt. If you replace the timing belt, replace the timing belt tensioner and water pump at the same time. Trust me.
I think the computer automatically calculates timing. No marks.
How do you replace the timing belt on a 1994 Geo Prizm 1.6?
I believe the answer is no. I have a 1994 Escort LX with the 1.9 liter engine. I broke the timing belt, and there was no damage to the engine. Yes, it is no. I had the same experience last night and nothing happened to the engine. I have a 94 Escort LX with 1.9L engine too.
Probably computer controlled and not adjustable
This procedure is more involved then can be outlined here. Purchase a HAYNES REPAIR MANUAL which will describe this procedure in detail.
Its more than likely your timing belt!
There shouldn't be any damage to the motor. Older ones would bend the valves in the head, but that would be 1986 and earlier 1.8L. New timing belt, and should be alright.
The timing belt is located inside the timing belt cover at the fron of the engine.
