If you need to completely remove either or both of the side view mirrors (not just the lens) on a 1996 Chevy or GMC Suburban, follow these steps:
1. Roll down the window.
2. Working on the inside of the door, remove the triangular plastic trim that's opposite the mirror. The trim can be removed by pushing from the bottom, straight up. It has a single, keyed tab that fits over a plastic fastener and can only be removed by moving straight up vertically.
3. Once removed, you will see a sponge-like insulator material, also shaped like a triangle. Pull straight out to remove, being careful not to tear it.
4. You will now have access to three 10mm nuts.
5. Stuff a rag underneath the three nuts to prevent accidentally dropping them down the door well. Be very careful here. Remove these while holding the mirror. The nuts are somewhat difficult to access. I recommend using a wrench with a pivot head.
6. Disconnect the power cable.
7. Remove mirror.
8. Reverse steps to install.
