Rear Wiper Motor Replacement (guide) ----

So yet another of the "common parts to die" on Expeditions decided to die on mine. It had the typical slow death where occasional smacks would get the wiper back in service, with the smacks needing to be more and more frequent in recent weeks. After some searching on here I decided to throw up this thread because I saw a lot of people talking about $200-$300+ to get this fixed, and even a guy that paid $50 for a junk yard part.

Advance Auto Parts carries the motor now part # 402030. . $40 and a $25 core charge. If you are at all handy you can do this job.

This was for a 2000, but I'm guessing most of them are the same, maybe slightly different for the newest generation. You guys have warranties still so it probably doesn't matter.

Step 1: Remove wiper arm.

Pull back the little plastic cover to gain access to the retaining nut. Loosen the nut until the threads are flush with the nut, and while pulling on the wiper arm give the nut a couple light taps with a hammer. Once the arm moves remove the nut and the arm.

Step 2: Remove the plastic door trim.

Remove the two screws holding the lift gate "easy reach strap". Carefully pry the plastic skin and pop the clips out. I started at the latch and worked out. Once all of the clips are loose sit the rear of the truck and pull the door toward you. The plastic slides over a bulge where the rear windows handle and door meet. Lift up and pull out here on the plastic and the whole thing should come off.

Step 3: Remove the weather barrier.

Carefully peel back the weather barrier making sure not to rip it. You'll only need to pull it back about 1/2 way to access the motor. I went right to left.

Step 4: Unplug the motor.

There is a single clip plug. Just unplug it.

Step 5: Remove the motor in its mount.

Remove 3 bolts holding the motor mount to the door. They are brass colored and mount to rubber flanges.

Step 6: Remove the motor from the mount.

There are 2 bolts holding the motor to the mount. Remove them and you now have the bad motor completely out. Take it to the parts store so you can save yourself a trip getting the core charge back.

Step 7: Re-assemble.

Just work backwards from step 6. The weather barrier should go back on without any problem, but if it lost its stick you could use rubber cement to reattach it. When you reinstall the plastic skin start with the part that has to go over the "handle bulge". Then just line it up and tap it back into the clips.

The total process took me about 20 minutes, and cost me $40. Where the guys at Ford came up with $300+ quotes is beyond me. Even if the part was $150 I don't see how you could get another $150 in labor for a 20-minute job.
