First disconnect the steering wheel airbag (yellow-tagged wires). Better yet consider removing the negative battery wire. Otherwise messing with the bottom of the steering column can set off the airbag.
Next find the pin that goes through the bottom of the steering column near the floor, remove the nut and push the pin out (its easier to access the nut if the steering wheel is straight).
Now you can slide the column back just enough to remove the sensor. The sensor is in a disc-shaped plastic holder around the column right above the pin you just pulled out. There are three plastic clips/latches on the holder that you have to release and then a 3-wire electrical connector to remove.
Just reverse the above steps to re-install. This is how I did it on my 1997 Chev/GMC truck.
