its not possable to do by hand it has a special anti-rollback feature to protect future buyers from fraud you must take it in to a specialized mechanic that will roll it back and put a sticker on your window that you can not remove under any circumstances it states the mileage is true and that the odometer has been replaced
I'm not positive, but I do believe that it reads the original mileage. If it read that of the replacement, people would make their cars appear newer by replacing the computer. Besides, I'm pretty sure the odometer is its own instrument and has its own memory, and has little connection with the computer iteslf.
This is called the mechanical limits of the odometer. If you wish to have an accurate measurement of mileage from here on you'll need a replacement.
My friend bought a 1991 Trofeo with a dead guage cluster. After some Google research he just changed out a capacitor on his gauge cluster (IPC) and it made it work again. The odometer then showed "Error" so he changed the BCM (Body Control Module) and it then read 149356 which could be the mileage of the replacement BCM. We aren't sure what the real mileage is so I can't say if 149356 is correct but at least it is not reading error anymore. The BCM from a junkyard was $70.
If the bcm stores the odometer mileage, you need to get one that has the correct mileage in it.
It is the mileage that is actually on the car. If the odometer is replaced, the correct reading is written down. Add that to the reading of the replacment odometer and you have the actual mileage on the car.

You legally can't. By law where I live a label visible to the driver but one that can not be defaced or removed must note the mileage on the original odometer.
