If the check engine light is on... you might have an open circuit somewhere. Pre-1996 vehicles are not as easy to plug in and read as the OBDII cars.

Probably a fouled oxygen sensor. Can be a DIY project, be sure to get the right one. Bosch makes it for all Jetta models - be careful in removing the wire, and you'll be OK. There is a reset button somewhere under the hood to reset the computer, telling it you have replaced the O2 sensor and validate the engine operation.
