What transmission is better the thm350 powerglide thm400 or the 700r4 its going to be used in a el camino for drag racing?

out of the two, you'll find that the thm400 is a better transmission all around. it was a more heavy duty built transmission than the thm350, and it does last a lot longer. we had built up a 77 gmc sierra classic with a 350 4 bolt, and it was pushing near 500 hp. tore apart 3 thm350's before going that little bit bigger, never had a problem with the used 400 we bought. just from my experience, the 400 is a better transmission, a little harder to come by, but much worth looking

1983 Chevy truck how long is the driveshaft?

I have measured the "Tube" portion of the drive shaft to be 66" in length, however, the reason i measured it was because there was a THM400 tranny installed in the truck replacing the THM350. This made the drive shaft a bit short for the THM400. So, I dont know if there are any longer driveshafts or I would need a Spacer of some sort to extend the overall length of the driveshaft. I guess that would be my question to answer your question with. R/R

What automatic transmission does a 1984 Chevy silverado 2wd have?

This will depend on how many bolts it has. If the vehicle has 13 bolts you will need a THM400. If it has 16 bolts it will need a THM700-R4.

What transmission should you use for a Chevrolet 350 small block?

For an automatic a Turbohydramatic (THM 350) should fit the bill. If you find a THM 400 it is a bit stronger with a shorter first gear for quicker launches. Manuals you're gonna have to match to the year, but you should be able to find many 3, 4 and even 5 speeds. whoever said that the thm400 is stronger is a bit retarder b/c i ran a turbo 400 in my race truck for two weeks and it basically stripped all the gears out of it and blew it to pieces... i was told to try the thm350 and after the new 350 transmission has been in the 800 rear wheele hp truck i have had no problems even running it on the street every once in a while.... the 350's are notoriously stronger even though the 400's were designed to be stronger and faster with the shorter first gear the 350is an all around better pick

Will a Chevy big block fit on a 700 r 4 transmission?

Sure, it'll fit. But it won't last very long. The 200R4 and 700R4 were engineered for the torque output delivered by a small block engine. Unless you get it built up to match up to a big block - and that customization is NOT going to be cheap - that big block will kill that 700R4 quick. The 700R4 became the 4L60, and, with the addition of electronics, then the 4L60E. You'll notice that, on corresponding years to the 4L60E, anything with a big block, diesel, or even a 3/4 ton and heavier van or pickup with a small block will have the much sturdier 4L80E. If you're swap an OD transmission in place of a direct drive (such as a THM400 or THM450), you're much better off installing something like a Gear Ventures overdrive kit.
