There are a couple of ways to reset the Service Engine Soon light on a Suzuki Grand Vitara. The easiest way is to get a scan tool from your local auto parts store. Leave the key in the ignition, turn so lights on dash light up, remove the positive connection and then connect again, do this five times, no more no less, this will reset everything on the dash board, service warnings, everything will be reset to factory settings, this also works with the immobiliser.

On our 2001 1.6 Vitar it was the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) sensor that had failed. Cost £160 to replace. You can reset the light off for a time by disconnecting the battery for ~5 minutes
