first off a 4.3 liter is not a 4 cylinder it is a 6. however if you need to set the base timing, you will need to disconect the base timing wire from the computer underneith the dash,(if it is computer controlled) it will be a brown wire or a brown wire with a white stripe. Goto the library for more information on which wire to disconnect. next loosen the distributor bolt and connect a timing light to number one plug wire. Start the vehicle and point the light at the cranshaft pully and rotate the distributor to correct the base timing according to factory specs, which will show up as a scribed line on the crankshaft pully. the single most important thing is to get a book from the library and watchout for the cooling fan while the engine is running (be carefull!!!)
The 1996 Chevy 1.3 liter engine timing marks can be found on the front main pulley and on the flywheel. The timing marks will be scattered around the outside of both locations.
Make sure the ECM is in field bypass mode (disconnect the tan wire in the passenger compartment) and set the timing at 0 TDC.

The 1.8L engine uses a timing belt, while the 1.4L engine uses a timing chain.
That requires an engine scanner to set the timing.
It requires an ENGINE SCANNER to set the ignition timing on that year of engine.
It does not have a timing belt, That engine has a timing chain and gears and they normally last the life of the engine.
The timing mark on a Chevy Inline 6 engine is located on the flywheel. It is a steel ball. The timing needs to?æbe located at 4 degrees BTDC.
