The 1988 Nissan Pathfinder VG301 engine timing is controlled by the Crank Shaft Angle Sensor, or in other words the distributor. which receives the signal from the ECU and the distributor receives its spark from the POWER TRANSISTOR, BASED ON THE CRANK ANGLE SENSOR SLIT POSITION. The distributor has 360 slits which measure the signal input at 180 degrees and 360 degrees. The crank shaft pulley has timing marks in increments of 5 degress per mark. The correct timing for a 1988 V6 engine is 12 degrees BTDC (Before Top Dead Center) + or - 2 Degress (Strive for 12). You can then attached the timing light to spark plug wire #1 and point the gun to the timing pointer. With each flash you should see the timing mark (Mark it with white out). If the timing mark does not line up you can loosen the distributor and move it so it lines up that is the damper mark with the pointer. EITHER RIGHT OR LEFT WHICHEVER WAY IS REQUIRED. It is imperative if you have manual tranny to ensure the engine is idling 850 rpms + or - 50, but strive for 850. 700 if Auto Tranny. + OR - 50 Don't forget to retighten the distributor. And you be better off with the Nissan Manual, cost $75 bucks. I have restored a 1998 Path SE V6 to factory specs, runs like a dream. I will assume that you have everything else working properly and no codes in the ECU except for 55 which means all is well and working correctly.

This is timing belt job is not one for the inexperienced diy mechanic. Not trying to be a wise guy, but get the manual, the timing mark set up isn't a simple explanation .

I have your answer for you. I talked to Nissan about this before. First of all, the 2001 Nissan Pathfinder doesnt have a timing belt. It has a timing chain. And Nissan doesnt set a life to these components. It is pretty much ment to last a long time and when it does go. then you need to replace it. Sounds odd but that is what the mechanic at Nissan told me. when it goes it will warp the valves and possible the pistons will hit the head and just destroy the engine. what to listen for when u need the timing chain replaced is metel slapping something or should i say like it isn't oiling properly. i would have it checked out every 60,000 miles.
