If you need to set the timing on a 1998 ZX2, one of two things have gone wrong, 1; your computer is not correctly controling the the timing and needs to be replaced ( this is a simple operation, as it is located under the radio of the the vehicle, and is realativly easily done), 2; your timing belt has jumped and has to be replaced (I learned this one the hard way)this task is difficult but can be accomplished if you have patience and the following items, a haynes manual # 36020, and cam positioning sensor with crank pin # OTC6486. The Haynes manual has more pictures and is easier to follow than Chiltons, and The OTC6486 can be purchased at any O'Reilly's, together they are about 40 or 50 bucks (depending on where you live) but they will keep your sanity and hair intact. If you chose to have a mechanic do this, ask questions, such as brand of timing belt they are putting on, are they going to replace the water pump at the same time, are they going to replace the tensioners also, you should get yes answers to the latter two, and a brand you recognize on the first question, if not, find another place to get this done, otherwise you are just asking for another failure.

There is no reason to replace the water pump when doing timing on the ZX2. The water pump has nothing to do with the belt and is not even in the way. Read the how-to on Team ZX2. Link is below in the 'Related Links' section.

What is the timing for a 1998 ford ranger 2.5l
Ignition timing is automatically set. sorry.
Go to www.TeamZX2.com in the knowledge base section there is a timing how to that will help...
what is the answer to the question i asked
In addition to the previous person not knowing how to spell correctly, his procedure for timing the 1998 ford escort is incorrect. The 2.0 found in the escort and the escort ZX2 does not have a distributor. Instead it uses a coil pack. To time the 2.0 engine found in the escort it is a matter of lining up a timing mark on the cam pulley and setting the crank at top dead center (TDC). On the escort ZX2 the timing is set by locating TDC on the crank and aligning the slots on the end of the intake and exhaust cams.
