set cylender one at top dead senter then point thr rotor at cylender one that will set the distributer then turn the cap to finish the timing that always works for me
If the distributor has not been moved the timing will be as it was before.
8 btc , vac off distributor, in drive , prk brk. set.
That requires an OBDII engine scanner. Can not use a timing light ( won't work )
What is the process for installing a new timing chain for a 1980 datsun 280zx?
No, you don't have to change to the new distributor if you don't want to.
NO THERE IS NO POSSIBLE WAY TO MESS UP THE DISTRIBUTOR. It reads light pulses on the camshaft to determine timing. I put mine on without paying attention, and it worked fine.
Check if there is spark and that you have properly installed distributor.
The timing on that engine is controled by the PCM / computer. You can set it by ear good enough to make it run. But you will need a OBD II engine scanner to get it right. There is no other way.
I dont no
no, the transmission or related components don't affect engine timing. however, if you allow the engine to tilt back too far, the distributor cap can hit the firewall, on 6 & 8 cylinders. if that happens, then the truck won't run properly. there is the possibility of the distributor getting moved if the locking bolt isn't tight.
to remove distributer from old engine, remove distributer cap, noting the position of rotar button. remove one bolt that secures distributor to block. lift ditributer out paying attention to the movement of rotor button. u need to note this when re installing so as distributor goes back in, close to same timing setting. replace bolt but do not tighten fully you will then need to recheck timing. if timing is correct engine will start. if backfiing occurs, your distributor is in , 180 degrees wrong. remove distributer, turn rotor 180 degrees then reinstall. check timing again
There is a bolt at the base of the distributor. Loosen the bolt and the distributor can be turned to adjust the timing. A timing light needs to be used at the harmonic balancer to make the adjustment properly.
