Use a ball joint seperator, basically a wedge with a void in the center to allow for the tapered shaft that is in the ball joint. I have had to use two wedges and sometimes 4lb hammers but the seperator is fairly inexpensive and it makes it a lot easier. You can purchase them in different sizes at most auto parts stores.

I was looking at one of Fords websites and for a 2000 Lincoln LS REAR suspension , as far as I can tell from the drawings , there are ball joints on the top on what they call the " trailing arms "
