I believe you are referring to the Power Steering pulley. The tensioner pulley is a different system altogether. You must, however, locate the tensioner pulley to remove the belt before you remove the power steering pulley.

The tensioner pulley should be generally easy to access from the top of the engine bay. It is the only pulley that should be attached to an arm that is mounted somewhere close on the block. (with the engine running at idle, look for the pulley that appears to be bouncing up and down). Turn the engine off before next steps...

Use a tensioner tool to move the tensioner pulley away from the belt. With tension removed from the belt, the belt should slide off of the pulleys. With the belt now removed, you will loosen the bolt that holds the power steering pulley in place.

(Power steering pulley is located on the power steering gear box, locate this by finding the power steering fluid reservoir. The reservoir should sit directly above the gear box).

Once the bolt is removed, the pulley should come off the shaft (with some force). You may have to use a pulley puller tool if it does not come off by hand.

Installation is reverse of removal. Good luck.

How do you remove the pulley from a 1991 6 cylinder Jeep Cherokee power steering pump?

The belt pully on most Cherokees is pressed onto the pump shaft. It will take the appropriate size gear puller to remove. The same remains on installing the pully on a new pump. The action of the puller has to be reversed and used to press the pully onto the new shaft.

How do I Remove the power steering bracket from a 1990 surburban I do not have to replace the pump just modify the bracket that holds the back of the alt that sets over the pump.?

I answered this one myself. You have to get a power steering puller, pull the pully off from the pump and take the pump out of the bracket, than you can get to the bolts that hold the steel bracket to the back of the pump. I could not find any short cuts except to take the whole thing apart, just like replacing the power steering pump.

How do you change power steering pump 1998 Chevy pickup?

Changing a power steering pump Chevy 98If you don't have a tool called a pully puller, your not going to be able to take it off. GO to a auto shop and ask to borrow one or go buy one. Now Doing this job is not very easy. The pully puler is easy to figure out. It locks int to the pully that is connnected to the power steering pump. Get two pairs of plyers, you got to screw the screw into to the center of the pully asll the way. Then hold the the nut closest to the pully, then tighten the the bold that is in the pully and it will come right off. Once you get that off you got to unscrew all of the bold around it, take off the three mounting bold that hold the a/c compressor on, which is attached to a big peice of metal. Take off the lines that are comming form the steering gear box. Then it should come right out. Now DO NOT THROW AWAY YOUR OLD PUMP. You need some of you old parts of of it. You take your old pump back to where you got it and get money back for however much the core charge was. Once you get everthing on the pump re-bolt evrthing back in place. Geting the pully back is quite a task to. Your pump should come with a long bold with a nut. Screw the nut in the pully and then hold the bold ond tighten the nut. It should slip right on. But make sure it is all the way back where it was.

How do you loosen the belt to install an alternator on a 1993 Chevy cavalier?

Well if its set up like most other engines it will have a tension pully that keeps the pully tight. they arent hooked up to power anything. theyre just bolted on so take it off and the pully will go slack. if the engine has a serpentine belt you may need to remove two. just remember to put them back on.

How to replace Tensioner pulley on a 2005 Chev trail blazer 4.2 in-line 6?

This is a common problem on these vehicles. There is one pully keeping tension on the belt and another (opposite side) just going along for the ride. The most common culpret for the whining noise is the Idle pulley. It is cheap and easy to replace. 1) Take the belt of be releasing tension on the tension pully and slipping the belt off the alternator pully (no need to take belt completely off) 2) remove the center bolt on the pully and the pully will come right off 3) Bolt new pully on 4) Replace belt onto alternator pulley and make sure that it is riding correctly on all the other pulleys. 5) Release tentioner pully You are ready to go! Takes about 15 minutes. Now you can turn the radio down.

Why is your steering wheel hard to turn?

Your power steering has a lot to do with the way your car handles. A sudden change in steering could be any/all of the following: low fluid, a broken belt (there is a belt that connects the engine's main drive pulley to the power steering, alternator, air conditioning, etc. pulleys) or the power steering pump went bad. Before you take your car to the shop, check the fluid and the belts to make sure they are OK. Note that loose belts are the same as broken belts. The belt MUST have the correct tension in it for it to work properly. In virtually all modern cars, belt tension is set with a spring loaded pulley that should always maintain the correct tension. You should check out the belt tensioner too. If all these check out properly, then the power steering pump is the next most likely culprit. Finally, the power steering rack - the thing that couples the hydraulic pressure from the power-steering pump into the steering mechanism - may need replacement or rebuilding.

Power steering belt replacement on a 1997 Plymouth Breeze?

take the pump off to loosen the belt first then put on belt and tighten pump and check tension in belt.

How do you replace ac compressor belt on a 1998 Honda civic?

Comprssor bolt will be in your way so you have to take that off. I take both mounting screws off and the belt comes off. You have to get the ac belt off there , so to do that you just cut the belt with a knife. Then there is no way of loosening the compressor, so what you have to do is loosen the pully wheel. It will be located under the power steering pump. Then all you have to do is slide that pully wheel down the slotted adjuster mount. Then you have to jack the motor up and loosen the engine damper mount and slide a new belt arount the mount. (If you want to take the belt off with out cutting it you will see what I am talking about). It has to be around the mount, and the mount is inside the loop of belt. Thread up the adjustable pully, compressor and drive wheel on the belt. and then Tighten the belt. When the tension is on the belt tighten the nut on the pully. check for the proper deflection.
