it doesn't have one. It does however have a rack & pinion unit
To replace the rack and pinion on ChevyCelebritys: Under the hood raise the boot and disconnect the steering column shaft from the rack and pinion. Raise the vehicle to a suitable height and support on jack stands. Remove both front wheels. Loosen the lock nut on both tie rod ends. Remove the cotter pin and take the nut off of the tie rod. Use a suitable puller and take the tie rod end off of the steering arm. Counting the number of turns remove the tie rod end from the inner tie rod end of the rack and pinion. You will need to thread the old tie rod end onto the new rack and pinion the same number of turns that it came off of the old rack and pinion Loosen the bolts that hold the engine cradle to the rear of the frame and lower the engine cradle about 5 inches, but don't remove either bolt. In order to avoid possible damage, do not allow the engine components to contact the firewall. Use a suitable container to catch leaks and remove the hydraulic lines from the fittings on the old rack and pinion. Remove the bolts that hold the rack and pinion to the engine cradle. Raise the rack and pinion out of the mount and slide out of the car through the drivers side. Reverse the process to install the replacement rack and pinion. You will need to have the front end realigned. When you have finished installing the new rack and pinion, refill the power steering reservoir and top off with new fluid. With the engine running, turn the wheels back and forth (car still on the stands) several times to pump the fluid into the new rack and pinion. Top off the reservoir as required.
Most modifications are possible if you throw enough money at them. Consider, first, that the recirculating ball steering box is much more reliable and robust than rack and pinion. At any given time, in a rack and pinion, there are never more than three teeth fully engaged (1 or 2 on the pinion and 1or 2 on the rack). If I had a suburban with rack and pinion, it would never leave the street...I wouldn't trust it off-road.
It is important to recognize the signs of part failure in a car. The signs of a bad rack and pinion are unusual tire wear, the steering is off, and fluid leaking from the front end of the car.
Extremely difficult. It would be pretty difficult to replace a rack and pinion. You are probably better off having a professional do it, or even just buying a newer van.
The ducks could not fly because they were pinioned. The pinion is the outer edge of a birds wing. Cut these feathers off at the end and the bird cannot fly. Cutting these off is called pinioning a bird.
The Steering locks might be damaged in the rack and pinion or the teeth them selves in the rack and pinion could be stripped Also the problem might be in the steering linkage going to the rack and pinion.
better off getting a new one. much easier. uve got to really know what your doing to repair a steering rack
Its impossible! ! Im messing with one right now and got myself into a big mess. Couldnt get the power steering lines off, and ended up cutting them and still cant slide the rack and pinion out. Soo we are gonna take the whole bottom of the car off to try and get it out. About as fun as replacing the transmission. unless you found a easier way
Remove the boot covering the end of the steering rack, There should be a thin flat washer between the tie rod and the steering rack that is flattened over the end of the inner tie rod end. Pry up the flattened points, unscrew the tie rod and reinstall.
While is it possible to repair/rebuild a rack, BUT the special tools need to disassemble are expensive. You are better off just to buy a rebuilt unit from an auto parts store. Rob
Usually the Rack and Pinion are not disturbed directly but the Tie Rod usually is. If this is not reassembled correctly you get an off centre steering wheel and bad tire wear. Bad signs, have the car checked, and adjusted correctly.
