OK, lets start with a few assumptions...like, you have a decent selection of tools and have a fair amount of experience. This is not a small job! It will take 4-6 hours and patience. Lets get started. Two things that are really important..1) the engine should be cold...aluminum will warp. 2) if you have a theft deterrent radio, you better have the activation code or make sure the system is shut off before doing anything. Here we go;
a) READ THIS PROCEEDURE OVER COMPLETELY BEFORE DOING ANYTHING!
b) WHEN SCRAPING OFF OLD GASKETS...BE EXTREAMLY CAREFUL NOT
TO GOUGE
c) THE ALUMINUM HEAD AND BLOCK. IT DOESN'T TAKE MUCH PRESSURE, SO
BE CAREFUL !!
0) Soak the exhaust manifold bolts, on the engine and on the exhaust pipe,
overnight with penetrating oil [PB Blaster]
1) Disconnect the battery, negative cable first
2) Remove the coolant from the radiator and the block. Make sure to keep it
covered as cats & dog like to drink it and it WILL KILL them!
3) Remove the exhaust manifold. Use a little caution as the nuts are devils! When
you put the tailpipe to manifold back togather, put a little Never-Seez on the bolts.
4) Remove the intake manifold. Be sure to mark the injector wires, IAC valve,
coolant sensor, MAP sensor, and the TPS sensors as well as all vacuum and
heater hoses.
5) Remove the valve cover. New gaskets will save you a blown engine down the
road.
6) Remove the timing chain. A new chain and sprocket would be nice if you
have high mileage.
7) Remove the Alternator. Make sure to mark the wires.
8) Loosen and remove the Power Steering pump, but DON'T take off the hoses.
Support the assembly with a little wire so it's out of the way.
9) After checking and removing any misc. wires, etc. now place a block and a jack
under the right side of the engine. Place a small amount of pressure to keep the
engine from dropping in the next step.
10) Now, remove the right engine mount.
11) Last, remove the cylinder head by loosening the 10 cylinder head bolts.
CAUTION !!! Loosen the bolts, one at a time [ 1/4 turn at at time ] in the following pattern. Start with the middle rear bolt, then the middle front, then the second from the left front, then the second from the left rear, DO YA SEE A PATTERN... You are working in an expanding circle outward from the middle. When you put the new head on put the bolts in and start the tightening sequence the same way...working from the middle out to the edges. DON'T FORGET, when you put the bolts back in to coat them with a little motor oil before insertion. Torque them first all to 20-25 ft-lbs, then all to 37 ft-lbs, and last an additional 1/4 turn.
NOW, lift the head slowly straight up and set on 2x4's or some wood...NOT ON
THE GROUND !!!
CLEAN EVERYTHING, REMOVE OLD GASKET MATERIAL ***CAUTIOUSLY***
Reverse the sequence above to reassemble. HAPPY MOTORING !!!!
me
what can i do to take it off if it keeps on turning
To adjust the timing take off the timing cover, take off belt and then line up the marks on the timing gear. You will need a special tool to hold the gears if it is a DOHC(duel over head cam)
If this is your first battle with saturn, after you defeat him, head off to Lake Verity to check if everything is ok. If this is your second battle with him, when you battle him and Charon, head off to Mt. Coronet to battle Cyrus.
Is it a stick shift?
When looking at the engine follow the hose off the left side of the rad. At the end of the hose is the t-stat housing......
It would but saturn ion cd players are huge and suck you'd be better off buying a new head unit all together ......., Saturn owner 420
Factory head bolts are 13mm hex, valve cover bolts on a DOHC are 10mm, and on a SOHC T45 torx. Timing cover is all 10mm bolts, crank pully is 21mm, timing components are 10mm, exhaust manifold is 13mm, intake you can leave on..... no, nothing special unless you have a SOHC and need a torx bit. :)
No B16 is a DOHC and the D16 is SOHCNow u can do a B16 Block with a B18c head but u would loose power better off doingB18C1 bottom B16B head
No. The valve springs can remain on the head when removing the head.
No, take it this way, Saturn is the 6th Planet in the Solar System, would leave you off to: Saturn is not the 4th Planet from the Sun, it is Mars that is.
yeah
