how do you take primary cover off an 86 sportster
Drain oil from primary. Remove pedals. Unscrew primary cover. Take off retainer cover piece evenly. Take off retainer clip. Pull the clutch out using the bolts and there you have it! Remember the order they came out and make sure you install them correctly. Doesnt hurt, actually you will need a second set of hands to push the retainer cover back on due to the extremely strong springs underneath if you do not have a pulley puller.
Take the rotor and the clutch basket off at the same time
Remove the derby cover on the back end of the primary cover. Behind it you will find a spring and nut. Both slide off. Remove the nut behind that. You have to turn the screw inside it to get it out. remove the bolts from the primary cover and pull if off, AFTER you drain the oil. Once you are done, install the cover and put the first nut back on and turn the screw, just until it bottoms and then back out about 1/8 turn. Put the other nut back on and the spring. Put in your oil and install the cover.
Make sure the bike is completely upright. Once you have drained the old primary fluid and cleaned off the magnetic plug, re-insert the plug. Pop off the derby cover and add the new primary fluid through this hole. It's tough to do without a funnel due to the angle but I've been able to do it before.
take the bolts off the thing should fall off, oil everywhere, its great!
The fuse box is located on the left side of the bike. When you take the cover off, you will see the main breaker and the box is located on the back side of the plate.
Inside the tank, take off the fuel shutoff valve.
you have to take off your primary cover and disconnect your jackshaft then usually there are only two bolts holding it to the inner primary remember to disconnect your battery before you start this job
TAKE OFF HOSE CLAMP UNDER CRANK CASE AND DRAIN OIL
Lift the bike on a stand that maintains a vertical stance (not resting on the kickstand). Remove the six bolts that hold on the derby cover to the primary case, found on the left hand side of the motorcycle. Be sure to have a new gasket ready on hand. Remove the derby cover making sure that the clutch spring does not fall off. Check the fluid level. A properly filled case will have just enough oil to cover the bottom teeth of the clutch.
you have to take the primary and secondary clutch off of the machine and the other half of the plastic cover thats behind them.
take off primary cover and remove starter thru bolt
