How do you tell if you have a Chrysler 8.25 or a Dana 35 rear axle on a 1999 Jeep Cherokee?

From what i know it comes down to the size of the axle tube. Other than that it is really hard to see a difference. a Dana 35 will have a 2 3/4" tube and a 8.25 will have a 3" tube. Lay underneath and measure from the inside to inside of the U bolts, that should tell you. If you find another way, tell me, www.myspace.com/fbiagent Actually it is pretty easy, if it has abs it is definitely a D 35. If it does not have abs it can be an 8.25. The way to tell is from looking at the rear end cover, if it is the body is round it is a D 35 if the bottom has a flat spot then it is an 8.25.
