for computer testing, just take it into your local shucks orilly store, and ask them to run a computer diagnostics on it
The flasher unit is on the left hand side in the steering column.remove 3 screws on top and 3 on the bottom,with a Phillips screwdriver,push up clip and pull out.

Could be the servo unit in the transmission. Had the same problem and replaced the fuel pump in our 1999 ford contour but it was the servo unit.
The 1998 Ford Fiesta 1.3 liter engine temperature sending unit can be found on the front of the engine. The temperature sending unit will be near the thermostat housing.

The temperature sending unit can be checked cold, and then hot, for resistance change. The test is performed with an ohm meter.
Follow the main hose that goes from radiator to engine block. It is on engine block between the main hose connected to engine block and a pullye. The heat gauge wire is snapped on the sensor. Remove the wire and replace the sensor.
As this was the year of the switch, it can have either. There should be a sticker somewhere on the unit listing what it has. Any A/C professional can tell you.
It is possible that the transmission is overfull and the pressure in the unit is forcing out the excess. Also, it is possible that the transmission is overheating and boiling the the fluid.
It is on the engine block to the passenger side of the oil filter. You cannot see it from any angle unless you do major dismantling of parts in that area. You have to remove the oil filter to even reach it. It is VERY VERY hard to remove without removing parts but it can be done. Feel for the wire that plugs onto the sender unit.
