Which pick up switch on which vehicle??? If its an inductive pick up switch with 2 wires it can be tested easily using a mulitmeter. Switch meter to AC volts and probe both wires. Crank vehicle and you should get a voltage of around 0.2 -2.0 volts AC.

To hookup the solenoid switch on F150 pick-up 5.0 after replacing it, first connect a voltmeter or test light to the solenoid's S terminal. Make sure the starter receives voltage at that terminal when the ignition switch is in the on position.
That is called an Inertia switch and Chevy did not use them on there trucks.
