The best way is to test it is under heavy load at a battery dealership. They will have jump leads that apply a very low resistance across the battery, similar to the load of a starter motor. The terminal voltage of the battery is then examined under load. It should not drop by more than 1 volt.
Other checks are:-
Electrolyte level in each cell should be to line marked. Top up with distilled water.
Electrolyte specific gravity, tested with a hydrometer:- charged 1.100.Discharged1.000
Battery charger applied to it should read about 4 Amperes. If Ammeter goes over scale it is badly discharged and possibly have a shorted cell.
Check terminal voltage :- 12.5V good- 13.8 volts on charge.
10volts =1 cell gone and pro rata.
Take your battery to Napa and have them test the cold cranking amps, they'll tell you whether or not you need a new battery
Drive to anyplace that sells batteries and the will load test if for free.
Then replace it.
You can take your car to any car dealerships, auto repair shop, or AutoZone and they will be able to test the strength of your battery. AutoZone will test your battery free of charge.
Yes, A car battery can have enough charge to turn on car electrical components but not start the car. This is not much of an indication of a bad battery however. Use a volt meter to test the power in the battery. If the battery seems low put it on a trickle charge. Most modern chargers will tell you if your battery is bad or not. The battery also has to be load tested to determine if it's good or not.
Take out one of the spark plugs. Check whether it sparks.
If you are using it to turn on the car a good battery would help.
you can avoid draining the good battery
touch the wires to the battery terminal
first of all if you have a good battery and im not saying you do but it could be fuel or air intake, your starter, or loss of compression.. but to test a battery you have to check it before you start your car then get someone to crank it and test it again because all battery will keep a surface charge but they loose that once a load is applied
Put the red test lead on the positive and the black test lead on the negative post of the battery and see the result.
if the battery is good and charged sure
