Get your tools out! This is a complicated and time consuming job.I just did my wife's 98 626 this past weekend. You are best off buying a repair manual to help but even with that it is a hard task. You have to put up on jack stands in the front ,remove the right front tire , remove the lower engine cover on the right, remove both the outside belts, remove the crankshaft pulley, remove the right side engine mount and bracket, remove the upper radiator hose, remove the water pump pulley .remove the dipstick tube and unplug the sensor for the crane shaft(plug the oil hole at the crank to prevent crap from falling into the oil),unbolt and remove the front of the engine cover(the front of the engine faces the right side of the car). notw you can see the water pump.the book wants you to remove the timing belt and you should if it hasn't been changed for a while(every 60,000 miles) but I didn't have to. I unbolted the thing and was able to twist it by the belt wtihout removing it . Now replace everything and your done, sounds easy ,huh?

How do you open thermostat housing on 1998 Mazda 626 6 cylinder?

The thermostat housing on the 1998 Mazda 626 6 cylinder is located underneath the air filter housing. You need to remove this air filter housing to get to the thermostat housing. There's two (2) bolts the left connecting the thermostat housing to the motor and another two (2) bolts facing the steering wheel connecting it to the engine. This is where the thermostat is housed.

Where is the thermostat and how do you replace on a 1999 Mazda 626?

I don't know about the 4 Cylinder, but the 2.5L V6 1999 626 has the thermostat on the lower hose area, where it attaches to the engine/thermostat housing. To replace it, I had to take the entire air box out. It took a bit of work. You also need to take off the heat pipe mount attached to the engine in order to pull the thermostat housing apart. Not the easiest job for a thermostat replacement.
