How do you top up brake fluid on a vw passat do you unscrw the lid on the reservoir or do you take out the little yellow bit on the side using a screwdriver?

You do not top off the fluid. The system is desige bake aned to have the light turn on when the brake pads are worn out. (You may also hear a nois from the brake pad waning sensors). If the brake pads are not worn out you may have a leak somewhere. You should have the brakes inspected by a qualified technician to determine what is going on (most places will perform brake inspections for free). Please note that your VW DOES NOT HAVE STANDARD BRAKE FLUID. It has a mineral based fluid that is specific to Euopean vehicles and not compatible with stansad bake fluid. Hope this is helpful.
