The ignition tumblers on the 1992 190E tend to freeze up from time to time. When this happens the steering column locks as an anti-theft feature. This happened to me and my only course of action was to have the a towing company mechanically force the car into neutral and tow it to the garage. I had to replace the tumbler, which regrettably runs around $1,000 as the steering column and dash must be disassembled to access tumbler housing. * ALSO TRY THIS: Remove the ignition key, put it back in and then turn the wheel strongly left or right while the key is still in the ignition slot. Many models of cars hold the key itself tightly which causes the tumblers to be very tight in the locking mechanism itself. My Mercedes does this and after a few tries (when you think you're going to break the wheel from turning it too hard) the car's ignition/lock tumblers loosen up from the slight prying it gets as you turn the wheel and the problem it fixed. * DO NOT: Turn your front wheels against a curb or other object, it puts pressure on your Power Steering unit which in turn makes the wheel very hard to turn. This in turn also makes the lock/ignition switch tumblers very tight which can cause this same above mentioned problem.
You simply need to turn your steering wheel either way to get the ignition switch to unlock. Turn the key while you are turning the steering wheel and it will unlock it.
Your ignition switch crapped on you
How do i unlock my ignition switch on 2003 dodge neon sometime it does it some times it doesn't but now it wouldn't unlock
With the correct key.
Try jiggling the steering wheel while turning the key. Sometimes if the wheels are slights turned when you shut it off the steering wheel is pressed against the ignition switch inside the column. If that doesn't do it you probably will need a new key.
Unlock the ignition? Is the key not turning? This car has a steering lock, but if the key is not turning you probably have either a bad key or a bad EIS (electronic ignition switch) make sure you check it with BOTH keys first, if you have another one.
try holding the steering wheel just a bit to one side or the other and you should be able to turn key then
i have the same car with the same probem but my key turns
Steering wheels are generally locked from the ignition switch. It is supposed to lock only in the OFF position. If you steering locks in any other key position, you likely have a problem with the linkage rod or cable that connects the ignition lock cylinder to the steering column. You have to take apart the dash and possibly the steering column to fix this.
Most steering columns will unlock once you put the key in and turn the ignition on. If you are having trouble unlocking the steering, you should turn the steering wheel back and forth with the key in.
That means you ignition is lock but its not a BIG problem. Just unlock it.
