use a harmonic puller
I have not taken one off a 74 specifically but every one I have done required a Gear Puller. The puller will bolt to the Harmonic Balancer and the center bolt sets on the head of the Crank Shaft bolt. As you turn the center bolt in it will pull the balancer off.
you should use a tool called a harmonic balance puller. the balancer came off in two pieces and the second piece that's still on the crank shaft won't come off
The crankshaft position sensor is located behind the harmonic balancer. You will need a harmonic balancer puller and an impact wrench good for at least 750 ft pounds. Access the harmonic balancer through the passenger side wheel well. Remove the harmonic balancer center bolt and use the puller to remove the balancer. Use 1/4 - 28 X 3 inch bolts on the puller. The sensor is held with two screws. Be careful not to damage the weatherpack connector when releasing it from the sensor.
Pull the belts, remove the center retaining bolt then use a harmonic balancer puller to remove the pulley. Make sure you use a disk that will protect the threads of the cranshaft when you tighten the puller.
To remove the harmonic balancer from a Nissan Maxima, first you need to removed the center bolt. After that, you can use a puller to remove the harmonic balancer. Before you do this, make sure you disconnect the battery and remove the drive belts.
Pull the retaining nut then use a puller to remove the harmonic balancer.

First remove the old one using a puller that you screw into the harmonic balancer there is a key on it so you can not put the new one on wrong just use the bolt that holds the main pully on to push the balancer on
