It's a length of flexible steel with an auger-like tip. It can be fed through a drain or cleanout opening and made to follow the bends of the pipe unitl it reaches the clog. It is then rotated until the tip either breaks up the clog or snags it so it can be pulled back out. The size of the snake will be selected to match the size of the pipe.
