How do you use an X-Cargo carrier if you don't have a roof rack?

Some X-cargo carriers have hooks that catch the rain gutter (if the car as them), and would latch onto their and then the carrier just sits right on the roof. Personally, I don' t have a lot of faith in the security of this approach, but I have seen a lot of them on cars, and not seen any come off. . .
I prefer a roof rack that is actually attached to something solid.
