Well, you need to get your pre-keyed image/video into your video bar (not the timeline), and then select it (it should be outlined with yellow). Drag the pre-keyed thing into the timeline, onto the other video, where you want it to appear. Then, let go of it, and a little menue should appear. Select "Picture in a picture". Then you should be able to manipulate it (with size and area), and that's how it's done.
Pre-keyed effects can be downloaded/bought from various websites that specialize in providing this kind of footage.
detonationfilms.com provide free pre-keyed explosion for download and you can buy a pack(download or CDs/DVDs) of various pre-keyed effects, called "Action Essentials," from the Video Copilot site. Promoting either site is not intended, only providing options.
I use iMovie. Open up iMovie and go to file, preferences, and look for the check-box that says "Advance Tools". Check it and you should have better effects.
The Simplest Special Effects you can use are the ones built into iMovie. For Example, you can apply an instant replay function, or a video effect such a negative to a clip. To see other special effects that are more complicated like embedding a explosion into an iMovie Project, check out my Youtube iMovie Special Effects Playlist in the "related links" section below.

NO, you need an editing program that can use layers. Try after effects or final cut! after effects is what Andrew Kramer uses.
imovie
You speed the word as 'miskeyed'. When you put the prefix with the word keyed, you do not use the two 's' as when you say the word 'miss'.
You do need a camera to use iMovie. Import pictures and clips that are already on your computer/mac.
Apple has great tutorials but i will show tell you how first you will need to name your project than you will have to record yourself or you can just put pictures. then there's cropping, adding music, and more play around with it and get familair
i would use pre-rendered/pre-composed smoke particles
not so far!
I Use iMovie On My Macbook
First you need to convert the Powerpoint into video format, The most suitable formats to insert into PowerPoint are WMV. AVI, MPG. In order to do that you can use a video converter to turn your files to this format. Then you can use iMovie converter to make the powerpoint into the imovie. you can do this with a MKV to imovie converter.
Depending on how the avi files are encoded, you can probably just drag them into the iMovie library. iMovie will then automatically convert them (this may take quite a while depending on the speed of your machine). Once the clips are imported you can use iMovie to create your production. When you are finished, you can use iDVD to burn your final product.
