As a 5' 3" 40-year-old who weighs 190 pounds, you may be insulin resistant. Many overweight people (particularly those who have frequently 'dieted' and lost weight only to regain it later) have insulin resistance. The majority of people who have insulin resistance are unaware of it. If you feel that this may be your situation, a low calorie diet will not work for you. The best diet will be a low carbohydrate diet. Moreover, if your physician approves it first, the best low carbohydrate diet for a significantly overweight person is usually one that will put you in a state of benign dietary ketosis. Recent excellent books on the subject are Protein Power, and The Protein Power Lifeplan, by Michael R. Eades, M.D., and Mary Dan Eades, M.D., and The X Factor Diet by Leslie Kenton. (If you wish to read those books but do not want to buy them, you can borrow copies from your local library, or buy inexpensive used copies on eBay.) In my professional experience, most overweight people (and many normal weight people) are carbohydrate addicted. In fact, about 3 out of 4 British and North American adults are carbohydrate addicted. Unfortunately, the average daily carbohydrate intake of British and North American adults is about 300 grams. Even worse, most of those carbohydrates are refined (processed) carbohydrates. You will find further details relating to all the above information, in the two related questions, further down this page, listed under "Related Questions." The above suggestions, and the related page links, will help you to naturally speed up your metabolism. Naturally increasing metabolism AND maintaining it long term will enable you to lose weight and avoid future weight gain. If you do decide to use this approach, buy or borrow the above-mentioned books. They will serve you well. ----

Cut out the sugars! Throw away anything in your fridge that has high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup or sugar in the top 3 ingredients. Stick to raw sugar or honey if you must have it. Get most of your sugars from fresh fruit, not canned. Get your dietary fiber!!!! Very important for your body. Cutting carbs from your diet is ridiculous. Our bodies need and crave carbs! Just eat the RIGHT carbs! Stay away from white rice, white sugar, white potatoes and white flour. Replace them with brown rice, Splenda, sweet potatoes and whole wheat or soy flour. And get your cardio!!!!! Fast walk daily a minimum of 20 minutes at a brisk pace. It'll drop 150 calories for you and strengthen your heart. Eat lean protein, especially fish or chicken. Tuna in moderation. Miracle Whip isn't horrible, just don't use too much. Cut your saturated fats also. Fats aren't bad. Again, too much of a good thing is a bad thing. Stop eating fried foods so much. Most people eat too much of that crap and that's a huge no no. Grill or microwave more. Treat yourself once a week so you don't get bored but certainly don't go hogwild and be stupid about your one day a week "fun time". Once you cut the bad stuff out of your diet and start eating right and exercising right, you won't enjoy what made you heavy in the first place. Your metabolism isn't as "old" as you think it is! Once you get in the groove your body will start to actually burn calories for you while you sleep! That, however, entails ingesting enough protein to retain and build muscle mass. You have to do more than cardio. Fast walking is great for cardio but light Weightlifting is a must to build muscle. Muscle burns way more calories than fat. Throw away your scale! You shouldn't care what you weigh. I weigh myself maybe twice a year. If you look good in your clothes and feel good about the way you look, who cares what you weigh? Scales are overrated. You'll soon get used to your new way of living and you'll love it! I've been at it for 5 years and haven't missed a day. I lost 30 pounds of fat and gained 20 pounds of muscle and look ten times better. I weigh 10 pounds less but lost 4 inches on my waist. I'm never going back to the old ways. Enjoy. Excercise, such as walks, but for those loving time for grand children, grandmas' you should just eat healthy, and eat less. OR just be happy and you'll find you'll want to loose weight, and being happy can actually loose weight, because some people stress over there weight, so they get heavier..
