The cheetah's habitat consists of open grassland and some deserts in Africa and, historically, in southern Asia (ie, India, Iran, etc). Humans have effected the habitat by grazing livestock and by building roads and cities that fragment what was once a massive, continuous range for cheetahs. However, hunting is the biggest reason that cheetahs are threatened, along with a lack of genetic diversity, which was caused by a population bottleneck thousands of years ago. What caused that bottleneck is still unknown.
