The battery should read 12 volts with the engine off. With the engine running it should read 13.5-16 volts. Any less and the alternator is defective. Any more and the voltage regulator is defective.

Your battery may be to old to even hold a charge. try charging it a little longer and if you have a volt meter ,you should read about 12.5v. if not ,then you need a new battery.
