When Mao came to power he destroyed all old Chinese culture, and created new art and music as Propaganda. He also caused some of the biggest famines in recorded history by spending all of China's money on nukes from the Soviet Union. He ruled through a web of propaganda, and set up his wife in such a way that all blame would fall to her if he lost power. He left a huge legacy and is still thought of as a great leader in China today. Though he caused the most deaths ever during peacetime, he also brought unity and equality to China.

Read the book "Red Scarf Girl" it is the perfect book to learn about the cultural revolution. Chairman Mao and his personal army of high-schoolers called Red Gaurds, destroyed everything that had to do with the "four-olds" These included things that were in any way related to old ways including signs, stores, possesions, and pictures that stated a old way. an example of this would be, if you had a picture that had your great grandfather in it, and he was a landlord, it would be confiscated because in the old days of China, landlords exploited their workers. I hope this has answered your question, if not please e-mail me.
