Similar: Both earth's moon and Mars are (as best as we can tell) biologically dead places. Both have considerable evidence of volcanic activity in their past. Both have some water locked into the rocks and soil in their polar regions

Different: The Moon has no atmosphere. Mars has a very thin CO2 atmosphere. There is no obvious sign of oxides of iron in the moon's soil. There is considerable evidence of oxides of iron in the soil of Mars.
