Coal is burned to heat water (in a very large boiler). The water is heated to steam. The steam is then used to turn a steam turbine. The turbine turns a generator, producing electricity!

Why is the rock coal valuable?

it's valuable because we burn it in power plants for energy

Do nuclear power plants pollute more than coal power plants?

No. Nuclear power is more efficient because nuclear power is used as splitting atoms, making big bursts of energy, whereas coal power is simply burning coal. So nuclear power uses uranium fission to create energy (electricity), whereas coal power burns coal, emitting carbon. (Mind you, nuclear energy leaves behind radioactive waste - that is arguably easier to deal with for the time being. Not to mention that accidents at nuclear plants can have devastating environmental effects.

How were fossil fuels formed including the roles of the sun and plants?

The Sun passed solar energy to the plants, and plants were eaten by animals. When the plants and animals died and started decaying, some of them got buried deep under the ground for many millions of years, where they turned into fossil fuels like coal, gas and crude oil. We burn that coal and oil to turn them into heat energy. Heat energy is transformed in power plants into electricity that goes through the power lines to our homes, then powers our televisions, computers, etc.

Where is coal begin to form from?

Coal is formed from plants, which turned into peat, then lignite, then coal.
