Opals are formed when silica (SiO2) spheres all of a similar size, are arranged into a cubic close packed structure. This structure has the ability to diffract certain wavelengths of light based on the spacing in between layers of silica and the size of the spheres that make up the FCC lattice too. This is the basis for photonic crystals that can be created synthetically today.
This non-crystalline form of quartz is deposited at a fairly low temperature. Water collects the silica and forms a solution that can collect in the fissures of nearly any rock. Once the water evaporates, the opal deposit is left behind.
Current scientific theory states that opals can take thousands, even millions of years, to form. However, an Australian fossicker has proven that, given the right conditions, the process can actually take place over a matter of months. See the related link below.
