∙ 13y agoHe or she is appointed by the Queen (or King) of Alberta (which is the same person who is the Queen or King of Canada, and who is the Queen or King of The United Kingdom/England, who right now is Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II). However, this appointment is made "on the advice" of the Prime Minister of Canada.
Thus while Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II technically appoints the lieutenant governor of any Canadian province, it is generally the Prime Minister who gets to choose this person. The monarch can disregard the advice of the Prime Minister, but this has not happened in many many years.
