As an American Citizen you can stay however long you want outside the USA! However, if your a resident, US Laws regarding that limits time you can be outside the US. I am not sure if it is 1 or 2 years before you have to enter the USA.

Canadians can enter and stay in the US for about six months without a need for a visa but should have a valid passport. If the person would like to extend their stay, they should apply for an extention with the Immigration office to legally stay in the US.

You can live outside the US for as long as you want provided you have the proper visas for the country you are living in. Keep note of when your passport will expire and visit the local American Embassy/Consulate wherever you are to get a renewal when your passport is close to expiring.
