The original Communism lasted for thousand of years: this was the first form of human society, with no classes or government or money.
So-called Communist societies since then have been cases of state capitalism.
Zero years as Communism has never been an accepted mode of government within the US. Karl Marx, the acknowledged founder of what we know today as Communism lived from 1818 to 1883. His notions of Communism formed in the early 1840s and ultimately culminated in him writing the Communist Manifesto in 1848 along with Friedrich Engels. Marx is further known for his written works attacking the capitalistic system. There is a minor Communist Party of the US (www.cpusa.org) but they have never managed to field a major political candidate for government office. So - there have been small communist groups in existence in the US for the last century some of which still persist today.
Communism remains a functional system of government in many parts of the world to this day. Despite numerous wars "against" it, Communism is an ideal as much as it is a form of government, and as such cannot be destroyed by armed conflict. The dissolution of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R) in 1991 was by no means indicative of the downfall of Communism on a global scale. Some examples of existing Socialist states (in no particular order) are: * The Socialist republic of Vietnam * The peoples' republic of China * The republic of Cuba * The Lao peoples' democratic republic * The democratic peoples' republic of Korea
Most of human existence was lived in a kind of Communism, with no money or government.
Communism has always been around, just not categorized as "communism."

69 years
McCarthyism started after WWII in the 50's, when communism started.
Anything after Vietnam (1975) doesn't concern communism. Vietnam was the last straw!
As long as your White!
Communism continued in existence long after the concept of the Iron Curtain was established.
Communism didn't last in Russia because Stalin had a warped idea of communism. It failed because it never was true communism, but was always corrupted. I believe it was not communism in the USSR, but more of a deadly mix of Socialism and Totalitarianism.
long march
Communism did not go into effect until the last year of WW1. It had nothing to do with any of the fighting.
1917 to 1991

Czechoslovakia resisted Communism for a very long time but was eventually subsumed by the Soviet Union.
Albania resisted communism the longest among Eastern European nations. The communist regime in Albania lasted until 1991, making it one of the last countries in the region to transition away from communism.
