Answer

I expect the engine in my TDI to last 300-400k miles or more before it needs to be overhauled. How many cold starts the engine endures, what kind of driving cycles it deals with, normal top RPMs, how much lugging, how much full power pulling, type of oil used, oil change interval will all affect the outcome. I knew two guys with mid 80's VW diesels that were up to 250k and 350k miles.

Diesels have a long history of lasting long, my dad had a 1999 Ford F-350 Powerstroke, and it had 390k miles when we got rid of it, we traded it in but im sure its still going today, and i seen a 2003 Dodge Cummins on Ebay with 550k miles so it all depends on how u take care of it. Also one of my family members was a service manager at a Dodge dealership and there was a cummins turbo diesel truck that came in once and a while that had over 900,000 miles on it with no rebuild. He drove mostly highway miles between California and Florida delivering cars.

Why are diesel engines found in heavy duty equipment?

Diesel engines have far more torque or pulling power than gasoline engines. Diesel engines also last much longer than gas engines because they are built to a much higher standard of durability. The downside to a diesel is that they cost more to produce. But for heavy equipment they are necessary and a diesel engine can easily last over 1 million miles.

Are diesel engines better than gas engines?

Are diesel engines better than gas engines is sort of a yes and no question. Diesel engines generally get better fuel mileage and last longer overall. But, gas engines are easier to maintain on your own and gasoline is much more readily available than diesel fuel is on the whole.

Why do diesel fuel truck engines seem to last longer?

The primary reason these engines last longer is the nature of diesel fuel as a lubricant. In addition, these engines typically operate at lower revolutions per minute, further extending their life.

How long do ford excursion diesel engines last?

Are diesel engines more reliable than gasoline engines?

How long will a power stroke 7.3 diesel engine last?

The Ford power stroke 7.3L diesel is one of the most reliable engines in production. Many will perform well over 500,000 miles.

Why do many cars have diesel engines when petrol gives a better performance?

Some cars have diesel engines because diesel engines give more mileage and diesel is cheaper than gasoline in some countries. In the UK diesel fuel costs more than gas but, because diesel engines give much better mileage (miles per gallon), people are still happy to pay more for the diesel fuel if they run diesel vehicles. Diesel engines last much longer and have much better torque at low revs than a petrol engine.

What are some of the advantages of having a diesel truck?

Diesel trucks can pull heavy loads because of the all the torque generated. Diesel is also more efficient than gasoline. Diesel engines are durable and last longer than gasoline engines. Diesel gas is also cheaper to refine.

How is a submarine powered?

Modern submarines are powered by a nuclear reactor. Others are powered by diesel engines while they are on the surface and batteries while they are submerged. The older ones that were powered by diesel and batteries had their limitations. While they were on the surface running on diesel engines they left a trail of exhaust smoke which gave away their position. When they were submerged and running on batteries they could only last so long and then they had to come to the surface, run the diesel engines and recharge the batteries. The submarines that are run by nuclear power do not have to resurface for a very, very long time.

Does diesel engines run on diesel fuel or gasoline fuel?

Diesel engines run on diesel fuel. Gasoline will destroy a diesel engine.
